MI DOT regulations for commercial motor vehicles
MI State Police Commercial Vehicle EnforcementOfficial MI DOT websiteOverview
Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) handles motor carrier enforcement. Michigan is unique in allowing some of the highest gross vehicle weights in the nation through its axle weight-based system. The state's automotive industry generates significant freight, and the Ambassador Bridge and Blue Water Bridge are major US-Canada crossings.
Inspection & Enforcement Program
Michigan operates weigh stations and mobile enforcement units across the state. CVED officers perform Level I through Level III inspections. The state has enforcement presence at the international border crossings and on I-75, I-94, and I-96.
Weight Limits & Oversize/Overweight
Michigan has the highest allowable gross vehicle weights in the nation, up to 164,000 lbs on certain state routes with proper axle configurations. Michigan uses an axle weight-based system rather than the federal bridge formula. This allows multi-axle configurations with heavy loads. However, the federal 80,000 lb limit still applies on Interstate highways. Michigan's weight law is based on the road classification and the number and spacing of axles.
Michigan-Specific Requirements
- Michigan allows gross vehicle weights up to 164,000 lbs on designated state routes with proper axle configurations (11 axles). This is the highest in the nation.
- The state uses a unique axle weight-based system rather than the federal bridge formula on state routes.
- Michigan requires a state fuel tax account for intrastate carriers not operating under IFTA.
- International border crossing operations through the Ambassador Bridge and Blue Water Bridge have specific customs, bonding, and pre-clearance requirements.
- Michigan enforces seasonal weight restrictions during spring thaw that reduce allowable weights on state and local roads.
