Overview

New Jersey's commercial vehicle enforcement is handled by New Jersey State Police and the Motor Vehicle Commission. As a densely populated state with major port facilities (Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, the busiest port on the East Coast), New Jersey has extensive commercial vehicle regulations and enforcement. The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway are major freight corridors.

Inspection & Enforcement Program

New Jersey operates weigh stations and mobile enforcement units. NJSP officers perform Level I through Level III inspections. The state has a strong enforcement presence on the NJ Turnpike, I-78, I-80, and I-287. New Jersey also performs targeted inspections at the port facilities.

Weight Limits & Oversize/Overweight

New Jersey follows federal weight limits of 80,000 lbs GVW on Interstate highways. The state has strict weight limits on the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway (which prohibits most commercial vehicles), and Palisades Interstate Parkway. Many local roads in New Jersey have posted weight restrictions. The state has specific bridge weight limits on the numerous crossings over the Hudson, Delaware, and Raritan Rivers.

New Jersey-Specific Requirements

  • The Garden State Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles in most sections (vehicles over 4 tons).
  • New Jersey requires specific truck routing through designated truck routes in urban areas.
  • The state enforces strict anti-idling regulations: no more than 3 minutes for diesel vehicles.
  • New Jersey Turnpike has specific tolling, lane restrictions, and commercial vehicle classifications.
  • The state requires registration with the NJ Division of Taxation for motor carrier fuel tax purposes.
