OR DOT regulations for commercial motor vehicles

OR DOT Commercial Vehicle SafetyOfficial OR DOT website

Overview

Oregon DOT Motor Carrier Transportation Division handles commercial vehicle regulation and enforcement. Oregon is unique in having a weight-mile tax instead of a fuel tax for commercial vehicles over 26,000 lbs. I-5, I-84, and US-97 are major freight corridors.

Inspection & Enforcement Program

Oregon operates green light weigh station pre-clearance systems and fixed weigh stations. ODOT officers perform Level I through Level III inspections. The state has enforcement presence on I-5 and I-84.

Weight Limits & Oversize/Overweight

Oregon follows federal weight limits of 80,000 lbs GVW on Interstate highways. On state highways, Oregon allows higher weights with extended configurations, up to 105,500 lbs on certain routes. The state uses the federal bridge formula plus Oregon-specific bridge weight tables.

Oregon-Specific Requirements

  • Oregon imposes a weight-mile tax on commercial vehicles over 26,000 lbs in lieu of fuel tax. Carriers must obtain an Oregon weight-mile tax account and file monthly reports.
  • The state allows higher weights (up to 105,500 lbs) on certain non-Interstate routes with proper configurations.
  • Oregon has a robust green light pre-clearance system at weigh stations for carriers with good safety records.
  • Oregon does not have a general sales tax, but the weight-mile tax is a significant operating cost for carriers.
